Welcome to Gov Scoreboard, where a century of Canadian federal data gets the scoreboard treatment. Each issue serves up one theme as a chart (sometimes with a second chart of the yearly change), the Party Scoreboard and one or two PM Scoreboards.

Every chart has the same backdrop. Each year is shaded by the party in office for most of it: red for Liberal, blue for Conservative and Progressive Conservative (PC). Diagonal stripes mark minority governments.

The Party Scoreboard is a friendly game of red versus blue: Liberal years next to Conservative and PC years. No trophies, just numbers. The PM Scoreboard ranks the Prime Ministers of the past 100 years or so. A rank is a place in the table, not a medal. We keep score. You decide what it means.

Shading shows who was in office, not who caused the result. Governments, red or blue, are not the only players on the ice. World events, the Bank of Canada, the provinces and decisions made years earlier can all move these numbers.

The figures come from official sources such as Statistics Canada. Every chart names its source, so you can check it yourself.

Gov Scoreboard is independent and not affiliated with any government, party or campaign.
